Senate backs tighter curbs on tobacco

The US Senate approved regulation on tobacco on Thursday that would usher in European-style restrictions on advertising and put prominent health warnings on cigarette packets.

Barack Obama, who has himself struggled with a nicotine habit, said he would sign the legislation into law. “My administration is committed to protecting our children and reforming our healthcare system – and moving forward with commonsense tobacco control measures is an integral part of that process,” the president said.
