Obama hints at hopes for fresh start

President Barack Obama signalled yesterday that Washington’s agenda would be dealt a blow by the possible re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadi-Nejad, Iran’s president, when he let slip his hope that the country’s election would lead to change in Tehran.

His comments, made before the first results had emerged, followed weeks in which his administration had sought to avoid giving the impression of interfering in a contest that has kept the US on tenterhooks.
