Sarkozy steals thunder of rivals

Jean-Marie Le Pen, veteran leader of France’s far-right National Front, this week put his party’s headquarters in south-west Paris up for sale in a bid to avert bankruptcy and political oblivion.

That the National Front is being forced to abandon its “Ship”, as the vast building in St Cloud is called, is testament to President Nicolas Sarkozy’s talent for destabilising his rivals on the right and the left.
