Tempers frayed in UK tangle over EU red tape

The worlds of business and Westminster collided in a spate of colourful jibes yesterday as each side blamed the other for failing to stem red tape from Brussels.

MPs on the European select committee were irked by the CBI's suggestion this summer that politicians were asleep on the job when it came to examining European laws. Digby Jones, director-general of the industry body, was summoned to explain this heresy.
