London confident ‘red lines’ will hold out

Tony Blair was on Friday night confident he had secured the UK’s “red line” demands at his final European Union summit, arguing that the British government could now face down calls for a national referendum on a new EU amending treaty.

In a victory for the prime minister, Britain obtained in full its desired opt-out from the charter for fundamental rights, ensuring there can be no change to UK employers’ power to fire employees.
