London mayor defends Muslim cleric

Ken Livingstone has defended a radical Muslim cleric for his controversial views on suicide bombing and laid into Britain and the US for Middle East policies that he said had affected the minds of the suspected London bombers.

The London mayor, whose defiant response to the attacks won widespread praise, placed himself at the centre of a storm over an invitation to Yusuf al-Qaradawi to speak at a conference in Manchester next month.
