US warns China over export safety

The Bush administration has told China to step up efforts to ensure the safety of its exports after a spate of product recalls and food scares.

In the strongest comments yet by a senior member of the administration about safety problems affecting Chinese exports, Carlos Gutierrez, the commerce secretary, said the US had already warned China it was responsible for the safety of exported goods.
