Tsunami and drought hit Thai economy

Thailand's economy con-tracted for the first time since 2001 in the first quarter of this year as the catastrophic December tsunami, drought and rising oil prices took their toll, the country's national planning agency said yesterday.

Figures showed the economy shrank 0.6 per cent quarter-on-quarter as growth in the first three months of 2005 slowed to 3.3 per cent year-on-year.
