ITV said that it had begun legal action against STV, the owner of two Channel 3 franchises in Scotland, over what it claims is a debt of £15m to £20m, writes Ben Fenton.

The broadcasters have been involved in a dispute since last year, with ITV arguing that STV was not paying enough for programmes such as Coronation Street .
