Rare disease drug system urged on EU

European nations need to put in place a system to swiftly approve and fund the use of experimental medicines to treat very rare "orphan" diseases, an association of drug companies said yesterday.

European Union countries should follow the lead of France, Italy and Belgium in supporting groundbreaking drugs that have been shown to work in clinical trials but have not yet been given regulatory approval or been authorised for reimbursement by national health systems.
