Opec agrees to lift oil production

The Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries on Tuesday agreed to increase its production by 500,000 barrels a day in an attempt to sustain global economic growth after the turmoil in financial markets.

It is the first time in more than two years that the cartel, which controls 40 per cent of the world’s oil production, has agreed to increase its output. The decision came as oil prices approached a record $80 a barrel.
