New Yorkers display a sense of shared fear and empathy

The bombings in London had an unmistakable impact on New York, where police began to inspect parcels and bags at random on the city's vast subway system.

Such invasive techniques would have produced an outcry in New York before it became a victim of terrorism in 2001. But news of the searches was greeted by a frustrated shrug as they were accepted as just another hassle that New Yorkers have had to deal with since the attacks.
