China to try short selling, margin trading

Chinese market regulators announced the trial introduction of margin trading and short selling of shares, pushing ahead with a long-planned reform despite global market turmoil.

China’s embrace of short selling – allowing investors to sell borrowed shares – stands in sharp contrast to recent moves in the US and UK for example, to curb a practice blamed for allowing speculators to drive down the share price of financial institutions.
