Iraq PM announces prisoner release

Iraq’s new prime minister, Nuri al-Maliki, said on Tuesday his government would free 2,500 detainees, in a move that appeared designed to reduce sectarian tension and appease the country’s once dominant Sunni community.

The detention of thousands of Iraqis has become a serious issue for the new government of national unity. Mr Maliki said the prisoner release would free those who had no clear evidence against them.
