Pearls: China provides real strings for everyone

Coco Chanel used to say jewellery should be viewed with innocence, “with artlessness, just as we enjoy the sight of an apple tree in blossom at the side of the road as we speed past in a motor car”.

That is why she popularised her trademark faux opera length pearl necklaces and even demanded high prices for them. As pearl mania is to hit once again – Sarah Jessica Parker will be sporting once more a strand of Mikimoto pearls in the next Sex and the City film – one thing is certain: fans should be able to buy the real thing rather than go for pearl costume jewellery.
