Footsie breaches 6,000 barrier

The FTSE 100 broke 6,000 for the first time in five years yesterday as the London market surfed a wave of takeover activity reminiscent of the dotcom boom.

The index jumped more than 50 points to 6,044 in intraday trade, hurdling what is seen as a significant marker to reach its highest level since March 2001.
