Conflict between two sides blurs warnings

Two inter-governmental meetings took place within weeks of each other in late 2005 and early 2006, both with the same intention – to tackle the increasing problem of global climate change – but each proposing a very different solution. Which of these approaches dominates could be crucial for the 21st century?

The first meeting, in Montreal in November/December last year, was the first round of talks on the Kyoto protocol on climate change since the United Nations-brokered accord finally came into force on February 16 2005, more than seven years after it had been negotiated.
