French PM sparks fall in euro

The threat of political interference in eurozone exchange rate policy spooked the currency markets on Tuesday, sending the euro tumbling against the dollar.

Dominique de Villepin, the French prime minister, called for greater collaboration among eurozone monetary authorities on managing the euro’s exchange rate – comments which were interpreted as a call for a weaker euro.
