UN considers Ivory Coast sanctions

The United Nations Security Council was in talks last night on possible sanctions against Ivory Coast's warring parties after a fourth day of militant loyalist protests against French troops in Abidjan, the main city.

Kofi Annan, UN secretary-general, said he deplored the continuing violence in Abidjan and that he was growing increasingly concerned about problems such as the reported unavailability of power and water in parts of the rebel-held north.
