Italy ‘ready to join EU mainstream’

Romano Prodi, Italian prime minister, on Monday returned to his old stamping ground in Brussels and declared that his country was ready to rejoin the European mainstream.

Mr Prodi, a former European Commission president, said Italy would work to restore good relations with other European Union member states, repairing some of the strains caused by the premiership of his predecessor Silvio Berlusconi.
