Tories see Brown peering into a financial ‘black hole'

Stable growth, rising employment, low inflation and relatively sound public finances have cast the economy in favourable light.

On Friday, however, numerous Conservative MPs said Gordon Brown would not be able to put the economy at the heart of Labour's next election campaign. They smelt weak economic growth in the offing and a “black hole” in the public finances.
