EU agrees rules to ease cross-border mergers

European Union governments agreed yesterday to make it easier for companies from different member states to merge, after ministers resolved a long-simmering row over employee participation and representation.

The new rules, which still require the approval of the European parliament, put an end to a situation in which several European jurisdictions made it impossible for companies to merge with counterparts from other EU member states.
