David Cameron’s attempts to gain the political initiative in the row over MPs’ expenses suffered a significant setback on Thursday when it emerged that George Osborne, the shadow chancellor, is facing a formal investigation into his claims.
The parliamentary standards commissioner’s inquiry comes after the Conservative leader sought to take a lead over the expenses issues, forcing his MPs to repay more than £260,000 in expenses and persuading a swathe of his backbenchers to stand down.
