AstraZeneca, the Anglo-Swedish pharmaceuticals group, is poised to appoint an outsider as its chief financial officer, as it seeks fresh management ideas to cope with growing competitive pressure in the drugs sector.

The company has worked with headhunters including SpencerStuart on the search and is seriously considering candidates from beyond the pharmaceutical sector.
