Continental chief spurns contract pay-off

The family that controls Schaeffler, the German engineering group, has offered to finance a €10m ($14m) pay-off to remove the chief executive of Continental, it emerged on Friday, as the corporate battle between two of Europe’s largest car parts suppliers took a bizarre twist that has caused outrage among German investors.

The relationship between the two companies has remained fractious ever since Schaeffler seized control of Continental in an audacious move last year.
