Volatility traders come into their own in turbulent times

In Chicago, they trade fear like any other commodity.

The pit on the floor of the Chicago Board Options Exchange where the Volatility Index – or “Vix” – is traded is always lively but in recent days, as Wall Street has been gripped by panic and despondency, it has worked itself into a frenzy.
