Universities tap growing income stream

Universities’ income from endowments and investments has risen at its fastest pace for more than a decade – reflecting increasing sophistication in their fundraising and asset management.

Such income jumped 13 per cent to a record £391m ($771m) in the year to July 2007, said the Higher Education Statistics Agency. Donations to Oxford and Cambridge accounted for a huge proportion, but some new universities have also successfully started alumni programmes.
