With its delays, bad food and uncomfortable seats for lengthy trips, air travel has always been an endurance test.

However, when baggage handlers went on strike last month at Heathrow airport, in support of staff sacked by Gate Gourmet, British Airways' catering partner, this endurance test became something much worse. BA's flight schedules were disrupted and thousands of people were stranded at Heathrow for days.
