Senator probes SEC role in Bear rescue

A US senator is looking into whether officials at the Securities and Exchange Commission gave confidential information to JPMorgan Chase during the bank’s talks to rescue Bear Stearns in March.

Senator Charles Grassley wrote this week to Christopher Cox, the SEC chairman, asking for “a detailed summary” of the agency’s investigations into Bear that were pending in February and March.
