Charter and Tomkins point to higher demand

Engineering companies Charter International and Tomkinspointed to signs of improving demand in key end markets but said a rapid recovery in fortunes following last autumn's collapse in sales was unlikely.

Charter, a supplier of welding and metal-cutting equipment, gas pumps and compressors, said it planned to return one of its Italian factories to production after mothballing it last year.
