A new type of internet application called geo-location software is satisfying an increasingly vital need of banks, retailers and content providers to authenticate - or target - a customer, shopper, or site visitor even before the web page loads.

The primary motive is security but multinationals might, for example, use the technology to determine the language preference of online visitors to its home-page.
