On Wall Street: Mortgage victory is elusive

In a distant time Wall Street would close out Friday wondering which blockbuster deal would emerge over the weekend. Now, thanks to the credit crunch, investors wait for the next government bail-out or forced sale of a shattered institution.

As the curtain draws over yet another week of market turmoil, the likelihood of Lehman Brothers being carved up before the opening bell on Monday is high.
