UK industry opts to freeze pay and save jobs

Almost a quarter of manufacturers have frozen pay or deferred wage settlements this autumn in an attempt to stave off redundancies as order books plummet.

A study of settlements, covering almost 13,000 workers over the three months to the end of October, revealed that almost 13 per cent had frozen pay levels, the highest proportion since December 2003.
