Hopes fade for united VAT boost

France and Germany on Monday ruled out following the UK with a cut in value added tax to boost domestic demand, further dashing hopes of a rapid and co-ordinated fiscal stimulus by Europe’s largest economies.

After meeting Nicolas Sarkozy, president, in Paris, Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, said the two governments were working on proposals for “targeted aid” for certain industries but she warned against acting with “haste”.
