At least 35 people were killed yesterday in a suspected Taliban suicide attack, outside a hotel near the Pakistan army's general headquarters.

The attack in Rawalpindi, on the outskirts of the capital Islamabad prompted fresh warnings from security officials. They fear militants are stepping up retaliatory attacks in the wake of the army campaign launched last month to destroy Taliban sanctuaries in South Waziristan, a remote region along the Afghan border.
