Robert Gates, US defence secretary, on Saturday warned North Korea that Washington would hold Pyongyang “fully accountable” if the Stalinist regime engaged in nuclear proliferation.

Speaking at an Asian defence forum days after North Korea tested a nuclear weapon for the second time, Mr Gates said the transfer of nuclear weapons and materials would constitute a “grave threat” to the US and its allies.
