Palestinian strikers back BBC hostage

Palestinian journalists in the Gaza Strip yesterday held a strike to protest the abduction of Alan Johnston, the BBC's correspondent seized two weeks ago.

Their union said it would stage further protests if the 44-year-old Briton was not freed. He has now been held longer than any other hostage seized in Gaza, where abductions are usually carried out by armed groups to win concessions from the authorities. Harvey Morris, Jerusalem
