Visa Europe charged with breaching rules

Visa Europe was on Monday formally charged with breaching European competition rules over the fees it charges on crossborder card transactions, as the card company and Brussels clashed on the appropriate level of fees on credit purchases.

The European Commission said it had sent a formal “statement of objections” to the company, in which it claimed that interchange fees set by Visa Europe restricted competition without producing sufficient offsetting benefits for consumers.
