Hybrid embryo ban to be lifted

Scientists will be allowed to create human animal hybrids for stem cell research, the government said yesterday.

But the draft human tissues and embryos bill did not go as far towards liberalising the field as many scientists had wanted. It also caused considerable confusion among commentators. The bill would introduce a general ban on the creation of embryos containing both human and animal cells, as the government had proposed in December to the fury of scientific groups.
