Date set for East Coast rail franchise handover

Uncertainty over the future of the loss-making East Coast rail franchise, run by National Express, ended yesterday with the announcement that the government would take over the operation on November 13.

But the statement served only to increase uncertainty over the future of the bus and rail operator's two remaining rail franchises - the East Anglia franchise and c2c in Essex - by failing to indicate whether they too would be taken over.
