World Bank faces questions over Congo mining contracts

The World Bank is facing awkward questions about its role in oversight of opaque mining deals and the mishandling of millions of dollars of reconstruction funds at a critical moment in Congo's transition to democracy.

In a confidential memo leaked to the Financial Times, the bank said it ran the risk of "perceived complicity and/or tacit approval" of mining deals signed with a "complete lack of transparency" by Congo's government last year.
