Brown quashes Barroso’s euro claims

Gordon Brown was on Monday forced to quash claims that the recession was driving Britain towards joining the euro, after the European Commission president said UK membership was “closer than ever before”.

José Manuel Barroso embarrassed Mr Brown when he claimed: “Some British politicians have already told me: ‘If we had the euro, we would have been better off.’”
