Poor construction of tsunami victims’ homes

A quarter of the 50,000 homes built for victims of the 2004 tsunami in Indonesia’s Aceh province are of questionable quality and many will have to be rebuilt, according to the leader of a team monitoring house construction.

The warning comes as concerns mount that thousands of houses are likely to need significant repair within a few years because of the rampant use of illegal and inadequately prepared wood.
