So much for prospects of a rapid turnround at Rock

Back in February, the government was worried that the private sector might make a fast buck out of Northern Rock if it sanctioned any of the bids for the stricken mortgage bank that were circling round the City. It need not have been.

Now under public ownership, Northern Rock apparently needs a £3bn capital injection. This is to be achieved by the government’s swapping part of its debt with the bank into equity.
