With a small tourist industry and an export-led economy dependent on European demand, Tunisia might have been expected to suffer hugely from the global downturn.

Its economy, however, is expected to grow by about 3 per cent this year, and Tunisian exporters say the crisis has brought new opportunities as well as hardship.
