Indices’ battle against ‘contango’

Investing in commodities five years ago was off the radar for most investors. They were too obscure, too illiquid and had a reputation for providing poorer returns than equities or bonds.

Strong global economic growth this decade, fuelled by China’s industrialisation, has turned the sector on its head, with new investors putting in billions of dollars and investment banks coming up with products to entice even more investors.
