The prime ministers of China and Australia, Wen Jiabao and John Howard, will be full of smiles today as they preside over the landing in China of the first commercial shipment of liquefied natural gas.
Mr Howard called the LNG shipment, part of an $18bn (€14.4bn, £9.9bn) long-term contract guaranteeing supplies for 25 years, the largest ever single trade deal for Australia and “hugely significant” for its resource-dependent exports.
