Abdullah conundrum over Afghan hero

A crowd surged up the steps of a golden-domed mausoleum perched in the mountains north of Kabul on Thursday to honour a commander whose flair in fighting the Soviet Red Army earned him the title “Lion of the Panjshir”.

With his wispy beard and piercing eyes, Ahmed Shah Massoud was idolised not only for thwarting nine Soviet attempts to overrun his Panjshir Valley home.
