Nick Reilly's appointment is a testament to his own reputation but also suggests GM's management resources are thinly stretched, writes Bernard Simon in Toronto.

Mr Reilly, who turns 60 next month, was named just four months ago as head of GM's international operations, a new post that in effect ranks him right behind Fritz Henderson, chief executive.
