Aren’t we in a recession?

I am confused. I wake up to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, read a cross section of the broadsheet newspapers and watch Channel 4 News on television if I’m home by 7pm. From these vessels of information one has the impression that we are still on the brink of a precipice and that the wrong move could see us fall further into a major recession. We are to applaud politicians for their honesty now in telling us cuts must be made. And I believe all this.

In my own company, I have had to cut my salary. Indeed, for some of the past year I took no salary at all in order to keep Natasha and The Thesp in employment. Yes, I am from a comparatively privileged background and was never on the breadline but I felt the pinch and the real possibility of losing my team and maybe my company – had matters not improved. The shadow chancellor suggests a pay freeze for one year and is reviled by the trade unions. From my rarefied position, dare I say, that’s not so bad if your job is to be saved.
